Climate change, infrastructure resilience, and resource recovery from waste have emerged as grand challenges for civil engineers in the 21st century. Wicked problems associated with these global are necessitating innovative, multidisciplinary thinking multiscale, integrated solutions that spurring development of a new field—construction biotechnology. While field construction biotechnology spans multiple scales, this review highlights promise potential nanoscale (<100 nm) biotechnological applications to engineering. nanotechnology has revolutionized other industries, engineering remained limited due techno-economic environmental barriers. Biological production functional nanoparticles (NPs), however, offers economical routes develop resilient, high-performance cementitious materials while simultaneously addressing critical needs related wastewater air-pollution treatment. Recent research elucidated biological NPs exhibit preferred—and genetically controllable—morphological characteristics could tailor structure-property relationships materials.
